Movie Review: 1949’s ‘The Red Menace’ – A Time Capsule For Good and For Ill

By Colby Malsbury

Warning: Spoilers ahead. It is highly recommended you view the movie before reading the review.

So Scarybug has severely restricted the range of hobbies we are allowed to partake in. Fortunately, that little impediment never impacted one of my favorite hobbies before the troubles – archaeological diggings through YouTube. We Gen-Xers seem particularly prone to this pastime. As the civilization we once knew and grudgingly tolerated collapses into a heap of ashes around our weakening middle-aged eyes, there’s something oddly edifying in kicking back and viewing a bunch of 1984 commercials for Polaroid and the like. Call it our comfort food, if you will. read more

There’s Just No Reasoning with John Andrew Reasnor

By Davis Carlton

John Andrew Reasnor of The Kids Are All Blight fame has written an article on Lamb’s Reign suggesting that Christians ought to become thoroughly conformed to the image of this world and support the Black Lives Matter movement. I’m sure that Reasnor has a really good and well-articulated argument that is sure to convince skeptics. Actually no; he doesn’t. The sole reason that Reasnor gives for supporting Black Lives Matter is “It’s true.” In other words: Reasnor argues that Christians should support Black Lives Matter because black lives really do matter. If that doesn’t convince you I don’t know what possibly could. You must be an incorrigible bigot who simply hates black people. If you are one of those people and you have a few possible rejoinders in mind when you read Reasnor’s “argument,” don’t worry. Reasnor has already thought of your objections and provides very thorough explanations of why you’re wrong. The whole of Reasnor’s article is a response to potential counter-arguments to the BLM movement. read more

The Pitiless and Multi-Faceted War Against All Sources of Strength and Comfort

By Colby Malsbury

The Scriptural presupposition for all psychology, as it relates to total depravity, is remarkably straightforward: ‘A double minded man is unstable in all his ways’ (James 1:8). And the veracity of this verse cannot be denied as we witness the entire societal fabric crumble before our glazed eyes. When we read that suicide levels among youngsters have reached levels not seen since WWII, particularly in the still-majority-white enclaves of the western and upper midwestern states, and this despite the fact that these pilgrims are supposedly reaping the benefits of the ‘greatest economy evah’, even the most mossbacked champion of American establishmentarianism must conclude that the situation on the ground is irrevocably Janusian. Assuming they first Googled what ‘Janusian’ means, of course. read more

God’s Meticulous Providence: the Mysterious Case of Rachel Held Evans

By Colby Malsbury

Who is Rachel Held Evans?

Woke ‘Christian’ females of a strongly antinomian bent: please don’t jump down my throat at the question. I wasn’t being facetious. I honestly had never heard of her before reading the news of her death, aged 37, this week. It might shock some of you fair maidens to know that I can’t name a single song from Ariana Grande, either. Some of us don’t live our lives saturated in the modern.

Well, whoever she was, I can’t say the tribute thread set up in her honor on Facebook appears too promising. All kinds of female emotional vomit about how profound and meaningful HER words were, how courageous SHE was, how SHE brought so much meaning into THEIR lives and how SHE made THEM better people, blah blah blah. If God is mentioned at all, it’s with the veiled threat that He had better receive her joyously, fantastic person that she was. I dunno – remind me again why women ought not to preach? read more

Fare Thee Well, Joel McDurmon – But Not Too Well

By Colby Malsbury

As in a physical war, the Christian cultural wars have an approximate 5 to 1 ratio of dreary marching down uncertain roads to bursts of action. And those bursts of action more often than not can seem like pointless scrimmages. It can get to be disheartening to keep putting one foot in front of the other in a situation that can seem like a stalemate, if not an outright retreat at times.

But then….every once in a while along the salient, you garner a victory and are reminded that being a soldier in the army of the true, unreconstructed Christ is a most worthy calling indeed. They are to be savored all the more for their exceeding rarity. The last such one of significant magnitude occurred six years ago with the rather spectacular downfall of Vision Forum poobah Doug Phillips, whose poisonous brand of radically egalitarian patriarchy was rendered irrelevant by infidelity with his Mexican maid. read more

The Marxist View of Man as a Generic Being

GenericMenCrowd2

From Gonzalo Fernandez de la Mora’s Egalitarian Envy: The Political Foundations of Social Justice:

Marxist egalitarianism is not only political and economic (“to each one according to his needs”) it is anthropological. The subject of the communist society is not the individual, but generic man. This is the famous text: “When the real, individual man will retake possession of the abstract citizen, when in his empirical life, in his individual work, and in his individual relations he becomes transformed into generic being; when man recognizes his own strength as the strength of society…only then will he attain human emancipation.” This is, therefore, almost a metaphysical egalitarianism, where man becomes a species, a universal concept, and acquires that property which belongs to the beings of reason, absolute equality. This thesis carries with it another subordinate egalitarianism: labor. This is a theory of work that claims to be a “means, homogeneous and abstract.” For Marx the worth of merchandise depends on the amount of necessary work required to produce it; not any one particular form of work, but only the abstract, standard work of a worker as a mean: “with a degree of ability and intensity within determined social conditions.” Work, as it becomes something statistical and anonymous, may be perfectly divided into equal parts. This is the suppression of all laboral differences. “The total laboral strength of a society, observable in the total value of all the merchandises, though embracing innumerable individual unities of work, amounts to as much as an undifferentiated mass of human work; each of these individual units is equal to the rest.” This type of “abstract” work corresponds to the “generic” man. In this manner, workers as much as their efforts are interchangeable and equal among themselves. In its final phase, communist society would provide total equality to all subjects – generic man – and the total equality of the patrimony: everything according to the quota or collective (capital, power, work, and income). Marxist egalitarianism, despite its protestations of materialism and empiricism, is the most speculative and metaphysical of all: generic man and abstract work are two over-refined abstractions of reason. read more
