The Current Thing: Thoughts on the Russia-Ukraine Conflict

By Davis Carlton

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been ongoing for the past several weeks and I have some belated thoughts on the matter. In America we are being told that Russia is invading Russia simply because they are a bully. The conflict has provided Conservative, Inc. with a convenient distraction from having to actually hold the Biden administration accountable for the complete dumpster fire that his Presidency has been. Instead we can be assured that the predominant Republican talking point for the upcoming midterm elections will be that the Biden administration has been soft and incompetent in its dealings with Russia.

My main concern with the Russia-Ukraine conflict is that it is, and will continue to be used as, a pretext to start World War III. Harsh rhetoric has been uttered against Russia since before the invasion officially commenced. The official narrative that Russia was simply trying to bully the Ukraine into conquest in order to reconstitute the former Soviet Union always seemed overly simplistic. The truth is that the conflict has been in motion since at least 2014, and most Americans and Westerners in general simply have no idea of the historical background that brought about the current fighting. I can honestly say that I didn’t understand what was going on before doing some basic research.

Americans can be forgiven for not knowing all the ins and outs of complex geopolitical issues going on in the world. The problem comes from refusing to seek the truth and understand what is actually happening. Most in the West which sadly includes most professed Christians simply swallow whatever narrative that the media tells them to believe. Mainstream media has absolutely no credibility, especially considering recent lies being spread about COVID which simply cannot be overstated.

There is already plenty of good information on the Russia-Ukraine conflict available from reliable sources. There are many reasons to dismiss the overly anti-Russian narrative being circulated. The dissident Catholic Archbishop Carlo Vigano has provided a good behind the scenes glimpse of what is going on as well as a much needed refresher on historical background. Much of what Vigano states is at least plausible, but we should be extremely skeptical about suggestions that Ukraine under Zelensky has supported “neo-Nazis.” The Azov battalion has received financial support from Israel, so we can safely assume that the “Nazis” in the Ukraine are about as authentic as the fake FBI Nazis that always show up at convenient times to further a media narrative. Dr. Paul Alexander agrees with the gist of Vigano’s assessment, noting that globalists have been fomenting war with Russia for some time. Perhaps one reason for this is that Russia under the leadership of Vladimir Putin has maintained at least the façade of Christian civilization in a way that Western Europe and North America has not.

All signs point to the United States gearing up for World War III. Joe Biden’s rhetoric early in the conflict suggested that the direct military involvement of the United States and NATO was contingent upon Russia expanding its military objectives beyond Ukraine to NATO allied countries. However, for some time there has been an expressed concern over the potential for Russia to use chemical weapons against civilians, and the White House has indicated that this would be a cause for a direct military confrontation. Even more recently Joe Biden has expressed his semi-lucid desire to remove Russian President Vladimir Putin from power without the necessary provocation of chemical weapons. Biden has since walked back his statement, expressing surprise that anyone takes anything that he says seriously.

The prospect of all-out war with Russia over chemical weapons has prompted decent thinkers like retired Congressman Ron Paul to predict that we are on the brink of a false flag event for the specific purpose of justifying military intervention. Couple this with the fact that Russia has also expressed concern that Ukraine will deploy chemical weapons against civilians and blame this attack on the Russians. This claim was immediately written off by Western press as disinformation, but more recent revelations only seem to confirm Russia’s suspicions. In recent testimony before Congress, Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland acknowledged that there are “biological research facilities” in Ukraine that the U.S. government is concerned could fall into Russian hands, but also stated in response to a question from Sen. Marco Rubio, “There is no doubt in my mind, Senator, and it is classic Russian technique to blame on the other guy what they’re planning to do themselves.”

It’s certainly possible that Russia could deploy chemical or biological weapons against civilians in Ukraine, but no one, especially not the U.S. government knows beyond a shadow of a doubt what will actually happen. The fact that a senior representative of the U.S. government expresses such certainty should set off red flags and be an immediate cause for alarm! This is even more concerning in light of reports that foreign volunteers entering Ukraine are being sent unarmed to the front lines to be used as human shields and cannon fodder. It’s also possible that another civilian attack that has been blamed on Russia was actually a false flag linked to the Azov battalion.

False flags have been used as a pretext for war for over 100 years, and are especially useful for stirring up outrage in an unwilling public into support for otherwise unpopular military intervention. Hatred of Russia has now become commonplace and any sympathy or support for Russia is becoming harder to convey in the current political climate. The media has even been caught trying to write off Hunter Biden’s laptop as a Russian hoax. None of this is to say that Russia is entirely without blame or that we cannot be sympathetic to Ukrainian civilians whose lives have been destroyed by the Russian invasion. Many Ukrainians, especially in the western part of Ukraine see the Russians as nothing more than invaders. As a nationalist, I respect the right of Ukrainians to live independently of Russia, even though like Hunter Wallace I believe we should stay out of the conflict.

I don’t know the future. I don’t know the final outcome of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. I pray for peace, but I am also concerned that this is being used as by globalists from all over the world as a pretext to start World War III and bring about the Great Reset. Don’t swallow platitudes about Vladimir Putin, Russia, or what must be done to solve a problem that most Americans know almost nothing about. I remain confident that He who sits in the Heavens laughs at the folly of the wicked, and will bring their vain imaginations to naught (Psalm 2). But if America is lured into World War III then we will reap what we have sown. Our military might has greatly diminished and we aren’t nearly as strong as many would like to believe. In the event that we are drawn into the conflict, then we might as well learn Russian Jingle Bells in time for Christmas.
